Diabetes and Limb Salvage

Those with diabetes are at a much higher risk of facing amputation of a limb than others. In 2016 alone, over 12,000 California residents had to undergo diabetes related amputations. It is easy for someone with diabetes to not realize the severity of the situation, because they often lose feeling in their peripheral nerves. The problem usually starts with a blister on the foot that easily goes unnoticed, therefore untreated. These blisters can become infected, which escalates because diabetes is associated with poor circulation in the limbs. As more time passes the infected foot continually loses more tissue and as tissue loss increases, so does the possibility of amputation. Fortunately, there are advances in medicine that have been able to save limbs that would have been lost in the past, but limb salvage is still a major concern for those with diabetes. If you have diabetes, it is important to regularly check your feet for any irregularities and to consult with a podiatrist about any issues that could affect you in the future.

Diabetic Limb Salvage

Diabetic limb salvage can be an effective way in preventing the need for limb amputation. If you have a foot ulcer and diabetes, consult with Dr. Morris Stribling from Foot Care of Central San Antonio. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What is Diabetic Limb Salvage?

Diabetic limb salvage is the attempt of saving a limb, such as the foot, that has an infected ulcer, from amputation. Podiatrists also try to make sure that there is enough function in the foot after the salvage that it is still usable. Those with diabetes experience poor blood circulation, which prevents proper healing of an ulcer. If the ulcer is left uncheck, it could become infected, which could result in the need for amputation.

Diabetes is the number one cause of non-traumatic amputations in the United States. Amputation has been found to lead to higher mortality rates. This translates into higher healthcare costs, and a reduced quality of life and mobility for amputees. Podiatrists have attempted to increase the prevalence of limb salvage in an attempt to solve these issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Limb salvage teams have grown in recent years that utilize a number of different treatments to save the infected limb. This includes podiatrists that specialize in wound care, rehabilitation, orthotics, and surgery. Through a combination of these methods, limb salvage has been found to be an effective treatment for infected limbs, and as an alternative to amputation. Podiatrists will first evaluate the potential for limb salvage and determine if the limb can be saved or must be amputated.

Footwear’s Effect on Heel Pain

Heel pain is one of the most common problems causing patients to seek help from a podiatrist. Heel pain is oftentimes a result of footwear, especially exercise footwear. Proper support is vital to the well-being of your foot. Footwear that doesn't properly fit your needs can lead to swelling, redness, and bruising. These symptoms could be a result of various conditions that affect the heel; after a full exam and x-ray, a podiatrist has the ability to determine which particular ailment is the source. If there is no bruising, but there is still pain at the back of the heel then this may be a stress fracture. Based on the diagnosis, new shoes may be a simple solution. Usually, shoes with better support are recommended to alleviate some of the previously mentioned symptoms. If you are affected by similar symptoms, it is a good idea to reach out to a podiatrist to help find a solution to your heel pain.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Morris Stribling of Foot Care of Central San Antonio. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Possible Causes of Bunions

The foot condition that is known as a bunion may develop as the aging process occurs. It is one of the more common foot ailments and may often affect women more than men. It appears as a bony protrusion on the side of the big toe and may cause considerable pain and discomfort. There may be foot issues that can develop as a result of having a bunion, and these may include nerve damage that is incurred on the big toe in which feeling may be lost, calluses may develop on the sole of the foot, in addition to the toe appearing red and swollen. There may be several reasons why bunions may form, and these may include wearing shoes with limited room for the toes to move freely in, a genetic disposition, or medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. If you notice a bunion that is forming, it is advised to seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can discuss correct treatment options, which may include surgery.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Morris Stribling of Foot Care of Central San Antonio. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

The pain that emanates from a stubbed toe may be an indication that it may be broken. There are several additional symptoms that are often associated with this uncomfortable condition, including swelling, throbbing, bruising, and possible dislodging of the joints in the toe. Patients who frequently walk barefoot may increase the risk of incurring a broken toe, and this may be a result of lack of protection if something heavy should be dropped on it. It’s important that a proper diagnosis is performed, and this is typically accomplished by having an X-ray performed. Once the injury is confirmed, treatment can begin, and this may generally consist of splinting the toe to the one next to it. This will often provide the stability that is necessary for proper healing. If you feel you have broken your toe, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can begin correct treatment after evaluating the extent of the fracture.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Morris Stribling from Foot Care of Central San Antonio. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What is a Broken Toe?

  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include: worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

The importance of properly taking care of your feet is crucial to overall foot health, and it amplifies as the aging process occurs. Research has shown women to have approximately four times as many foot conditions than men, and this may be due to wearing high heels for many years, which may not allow adequate room for the toes to move about in. Aging may cause the feet to change sizes, and this may be a result of the feet becoming flattened and spread out as time evolves. Wearing shoes that do not fit properly can cause corns to form, and this is mainly because of increased friction the toes may bear. Additionally, a fungus may develop that is known as Athlete's foot, and this is extremely contagious and may be prevented by wearing appropriate shoes in public pools and surrounding areas. It is suggested to consult with a podiatrist for additional information on how to avoid potential foot ailments in elderly people.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Morris Stribling from Foot Care of Central San Antonio. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
