Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the nerves in the peripheral nervous system. The nerves become damaged and as a result, this type of neuropathy develops. The symptoms that accompany neuropathy include numbness, tingling or a burning sensation and will most often affect the feet. Additional symptoms may include a loss of balance and it’s common to experience weakness. There are several causes that may promote the onset of this ailment, including a vitamin deficiency, kidney failure, shingles, or alcoholism. Additionally, this condition may be the result of certain chemotherapy drugs that are taken. It’s important to have a correct diagnosis performed so the proper medication can be taken to alleviate the symptoms. It is suggested to consult with a podiatrist if your feet are affected by neuropathy.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is when arteries are constricted due to plaque (fatty deposits) build-up. This results in less blood flow to the legs and other extremities. The main cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, in which plaque builds up in the arteries.

Symptoms

Symptoms of PAD include:

  • Claudication (leg pain from walking)
  • Numbness in legs
  • Decrease in growth of leg hair and toenails
  • Paleness of the skin
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Sores and wounds on legs and feet that won’t heel
  • Coldness in one leg

It is important to note that a majority of individuals never show any symptoms of PAD.

Diagnosis

While PAD occurs in the legs and arteries, Podiatrists can diagnose PAD. Podiatrists utilize a test called an ankle-brachial index (ABI). An ABI test compares blood pressure in your arm to you ankle to see if any abnormality occurs. Ultrasound and imaging devices may also be used.

Treatment

Fortunately, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and quitting smoking, can all treat PAD. Medications that prevent clots from occurring can be prescribed. Finally, in some cases, surgery may be recommended.

The Definition of a Bunion

A bony protrusion that forms on the side of the foot is referred to as a bunion. It is a misalignment of the bone underneath the big toe, and can be worsened by wearing shoes that are too tight. This ailment can cause severe pain and unwanted corns and calluses may form as a result of the protrusion. There are several ways to obtain temporary relief, including wearing a cushioned pad over the affected area and choosing to wear shoes with adequate room to accommodate the bunion. Additionally, it will benefit the general health of the foot to lose weight if obesity is a factor. For severe bunions, surgery may be the only option for permanent removal and may take several months for a complete recovery. It’s suggested to consult with a podiatrist for additional information about bunions.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Dr. Morris Stribling of Foot Care of Central San Antonio. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Causes of Flat Feet

If you hear the term “fallen arches” or “pronation of the feet”, it typically refers to a condition called flat feet. Most babies are born with flat feet, and proper arches generally develop as the child approaches adulthood.  If this condition is still evident as your child ages, you may notice specific symptoms including pain in the foot while they stand for long periods of time, or they may walk on the outer edges of their feet. Occasionally, this ailment can be caused by certain maladies such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, or an injury to the foot. Additionally wearing improper footwear can be a reason for flat feet to develop, and genetic traits may be responsible for the formation of this condition. A proper diagnosis is typically performed by conducting a thorough examination of the feet, and this may include an analysis of the gait. Please consult with a podiatrist for additional information if you or your child is afflicted by flat feet.

What are Flat Feet?

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms:

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

When you decide to purchase a new pair of shoes, it’s important to have your feet properly measured. This can be achieved at the shoe store by using a measuring device designed specifically for determining the correct shoe size. If you have a bony protrusion on the side of the big toe often referred to as bunion, one foot may need a larger size shoe to accommodate this condition. Research has suggested the best time of day to have shoes fitted is when the feet are their largest, later in the day, which may often be due to normal swelling which typically occurs. There are numerous ailments that may result from poorly fitting shoes, including the formation of blisters and corns from wearing shoes that may be too tight. You may also possibly experience pain in the arches from choosing shoes that are too big. If you have questions and would like additional information on how to learn your correct shoe size, please schedule a consultation with a podiatrist.

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly.
